You need to ask the Northeast division why that up to 50% of the actual violent crimes in the village do not appear on http://www.lapdcrimemaps.org/

Numerous robberies, burglaries, homicides, and aggravated assaults have occurred in the village in recent months. You will not find such data on the LAPD crime maps.

We must ask of the Northeast Division, Atwater's Senior Lead Officer Gina, and Council member Garcetti why were are being mislead.

We dont want to find ourselves in a similar situations like our neighbors in Silver Lake and Echo Park. The robberies that the LAPD featured in their press conference on Tues are nowhere to be found on the LAPD crime maps. Such robberies occured on Rowena and Hyperion and one included a victim being slashed in the face. No wonder the SL/EP communities are angry that they had been left in the dark.

If the LAPD does not answer to the underreporting on its website, then they should remove the crime maps immediately. Our community must arm itself with accurate information to remain safe and vigilant.

Thank you GlendaleBlvd.. I saw your previous post and yes many are very concerned about the rise in crime everywhere in the city, in fact everywhere period. Because Silver lake is seen as more "Chi Chi" than Atwater, I think they thought they were immune to the crime that has been occuring more frequently. Its just a a fact that as our economy worsens people become more desperate. Unfortunately we cannot rely on the police, we have to stand up and watch out for each other. PEACE!!

Not trying to be a smart-a** here, but how do you know that 50% of the violent crimes don't appear on the map?

Also, if you have this information, why don't you call officer Gina and then report back to us... Perhaps then we can get upset and make the phone call that are necessary.

Glendale - Aha, didn't see your previous posts with the crimes you're aware of. Have you called Officer Gina?

As of right now, there is no mention on the crime map of the very publicized homicide on Glenmanor last night.

Definitely seems to be something shady with how the map reports crimes.

How fast do you expect they update that site? This IS the government we're talking about here...

The Compustat Crime Maps are updated frequently. As of now the data only shows activity through 3/28/09.

Since the murder on Glenmanor was last night at 9:15 p.m. it won't show yet. Nor has LAPD issued any reports on its website with details.

As a community we should watch to make sure these maps are complete and honest. LAPD DOES use these maps to put police on the streets. If they are incorrect WE ALL pay the price with potential increase in crimes and loss of property values. LAPD should be held accountable.

If GLENDALE BLVD is correct, then LAPD has some explaining to do.

Further evidence that we are being denied the true crime data, if you look at the LAPD crime maps, the 3/31 homicide on Glenmanor Place is nowhere to be found.

Folks, this recent "decline" in crime that our police department is touting is a sham. We need to hold Northeast Captain Smith and Senior Lead Officer Gina Chiavone accountable for this massive misinformation campagin that is jeopardizing our public safety.

There are a host of robberies, burglaries and assaults occuring in Atwater on a weekly basis that are not being reflected on the crime maps.

I sent a few threads to Captain Bill Murphy at LAPD here is his response:

Forwarded message from Captain Bill Murphy LAPD

If you could send this around I would appreciate it.

Simply put, what I quote in the newsletter is a very short term crime update - what has been happening over the past 1-2 weeks. Clearly, I could recap a whole year and lots of crimes would come up - but I believe people want to know what's happening now. I mentioned in the newsletter that the maps went up to last Saturday night (3-28-09). When I wrote the newsletter the homicide in Atwater Village had occurred (Tuesday night) so I mentioned it on Thursday (normally would recap lesser crimes the next week).

The purpose of the newsletter is not to dissect every crime - there is simply too many to do this when you consider Northeast is 30 square miles and has 300 thousand people. I simply want to give a quick overview of crime. Anyone who signs up for epolicing can get actual crime statics updated daily.

Also, as to the quote that "50% of the crimes committed are not on the maps." Anything that is reported goes on the maps. The crime dots on the map are generated from actual reports of crimes so they are pretty accurate. If residents are not reporting crime, we need them to. This is discussed in every community meeting. If people do not report crime - then we cannot track them and prepare strategies to reduce them. Hopefully, everyone understand this.

As to the Silver Lake robberies being not on the maps, these occurred from December through February and would clearly be on the maps if we expanded the time range (if I asked for all robberies that occurred between December through March). I can assure you that they were on maps when 400 people attended our community meeting at the Ivanhoe Elementary School because I used them in my presentation that night.

Lastly, I only asked that the community check their facts before they send widely published e-mails. We are not perfect - and should be held responsible for our actions. But it's difficult to defend personal mis-interpretations of incidents or issues.

Thanks Bill

Captain Murphy’s prompt response is appreciated, but I wholly take issue with his assertions. I was not referring to his recent newsletter. I was addressing unreported Atwater crime on the LAPD crime maps that are available to view at http://www.lapdcrimemaps.org/

Here is an easy-to-follow documentation with detailed incidents that demonstrates that crime IS NOT BEING FULLY DISCLOSED on the crime maps:

• Juan Carlos Correa was murdered on 3000 Silver Lake Blvd on 12/26/08 at 5:55pm. The incident details can be found at http://friendsofatwatervillage.org/blog/2008/12/atwater_village_homicide_at_30.html
This murder DOES NOT appear on the crime map.
• Joey Romo was murdered on the 2900 block of Glenmanor Place at 9:15pm on 3/31/09. If you click on the calendar on the LAPD map, you can search for crimes on and prior to 4/1/09. This murder DOES NOT appear on the crime map.

• Assault with a deadly weapon on 11/4/08 on Tyburn and La Clede. Male was shot at 2:12 pm. Read details here:
http://la.everyblock.com/news-articles/locations/neighborhoods/glassell-park/?page=2
This crime (assault with a deadly weapon) DOES NOT appear on the crime map.

• A violent robbery occurred on Friday, January 30th at Rowena and Silver Lake Blvd. A man was severely beaten and robbed. This incident spawned the community awareness of the rash of local robberies. Details are found at http://laist.com/2009/02/03/a_rash_of_violence_in_silver_lake.php
This robbery DOES NOT appear on the crime maps.

• Captain Murphy claims the nine robberies that were part of the Silver Lake/Echo Park robberies are all documented on the LAPD crime maps. Review the link to a photo of the map that Northeast Lt. Delores presented to the media on 2/03/09 regarding the Silver Lake Robberies.

[continued from above post]

I encourage the community to cross-check the robberies on Lt. Delores’ map and the LAPD crime maps. You will find a significant discrepancy in the reporting. Several of the robberies DO NOT appear on the crime maps.

• The CVS pharmacy at 3224 Glendale Blvd was burglarized twice between December 2008 and January 2009. Two African American suspects were captured on surveillance video during one of the burglaries. These burglaries DO NOT appear on the crime maps.

Our community will not be complacent with inaccurate reporting. We must remain vigilant and aware. If our Northeast officials do not offer a satisfactory explanation and solution for this inaccurate reporting, we should take this issue to the Los Angeles Police Commission with our documentation.

Glendale Blvd. All great questions.

Why not address this directly via e-mail to Captain Bill Murphy at WILLIAM MURPHY [william.murphy@lapd.lacity.org]

You can also cc Officer Gina Covan [30347@lapd.lacity.org]

Post their reply back to the boards.

I don't work for LAPD, but I am supportive of their efforts to try to make LA safe for all of us. That's why I copy and paste some of the e-Police newsletters to these boards. But I agree you should ask them to explain the descrepencies that you have noted.

In the April 5th edition of the LA Times several errors in the LAPD crime maps have been discovered. This may be why the crimes GlendaleBlvd pointed out are missing.

A link to this message has been sent to the LA Times to explore whether this error is more widespread than reported.

Am I out of order to point out that the lapd Crime maps at lapdcrimemaps.org (those are the ones we're talking about, right?) only go back 7 days.

it makes sense that that stuff isn't showing up because it took place more than 7 days ago.

right?

am i missing something?

You are incorrect. The map goes back six monthss. Put in 7 days to optimize your search and you can search back to October 1, 2008.

Much better listing format, easier to read, and from the same LAPD data, is on Every Block:
